I am often asked what is Counselling? What do you do? Do you prescribe?
My role as a Counsellor is to assist, encourage and support you with your mental health. Our lives can become difficult to navigate in lots of ways, such as family life, work, relationships, feelings of sadness, anxiety, low mood, fear, anger, loneliness as well as feelings of you don’t matter or belong anywhere. There are so many other ways and issues which can affect our personal wellbeing so do always express exactly what is going on for you.
Once you find the therapist you are happy to work with, it is important that you attend regularly to work through your issues and discover ways of supporting yourself. I collaborate with my clients, finding out the best way to proceed as we all have varied role in our lives which we need to manage.
Attending regular sessions, allows you to share with me your thoughts and feelings. I have a non-biased approach, ensuring I gain full understanding of your word. I will assist you to find your way of taking care of yourself and making decisions that are the best for you. Sometimes we will be going through difficulties, that we share these with family or friends. You may find they offer their advice, suggestions or tell you how to go about working things out. This can be unhelpful as this is their way and not necessarily beneficial for you. Our work together will allow you to find your own plan of action, as this is important for you to gain control over your choices and discissions.
I don’t prescribe medication or diagnose. I may introduce tools to assist your development, if I believe they will be of benefit to you, and if appropriate, signpost you to other agencies or specialist services. You will never be forced to do be anything, you have the final say as to how you wish to work on your issues. I do encourage you to make the best decisions for yourself. This supports your self-awareness and personal growth.
To support your decision to work with me, I offer a 30-minute complimentary session, which allows you to meet with me and visit my therapy room. You may ask any questions you may have and become familiar with our space. You are under no obligation to work with me at this point. You may take your time and make the best decision for yourself. I can also signpost you to other therapists or the appropriate agency for your needs. The therapy relationship must feel comfortable and safe for you to have a positive experience
