Silence & Spring
Recently I have been coming across the word silence.
It was shared on social media, relating to friendships and fallouts. I also came across the word in a talk I was listening to online, regarding taking the time to be in silence. There has been other instances, with silence being the theme, which to me is a sign to take note and probably means I need to take time to be silent.
Now we are entering into the spring season, the weather is slowwwwwwly shifting here in the UK. It’s no longer icy, the daffodils and bluebells are appearing and my favourite, the blossom trees, are beginning to bloom!! SPRINGTIME!!!
(As I am writing this hailstone and wind are doing battle outside).
Spending time in nature
My thoughts have now turned to nature, which I encourage everyone of you to engage in. Whether that is taking a walk in the park, your garden, or within any green space you have access to. This is soooooo beneficial for you.The benefits of being in green spaces, amongst nature, is therapeutic in so many ways. It is calming, good for your nervous system, your mental wellbeing, an all-round good feeling activity.
Being in nature provides you with the opportunity to escape your daily routine. In as little as 10 minutes, you can gain the benefits of being outdoors. The fresh air, your surroundings and take note of the birds, bees and insects. To aid your experience, try toleave your technology behind headphones off & phones preferablyoff or on silent.
Yes I realise this can be a stretch for some of you but give it a go, take in the sights, look up, say hi to someone, you will be surprised!
Technology although useful and beneficial, it takes our attention away from the simple pleasures. I see so many walking with their heads down, missing so much of their environment, and with headphones on, not hearing traffic or others around them. Sad.
The power of silence
Now back to silence.
Have you ever heard a flower grow or heard the leaves or blossoms on the trees sprouting.
Do you hear their buds budding or opening? Nope….!
They all do their own thing in silence.Silence can be one of our greatest strengths, if we allow ourselves to be in this state.Silence allows us to notice ourselves, how we are feeling and what we are thinking.
Can also be beneficial when we need to make important decisions. Silence can be evident within my therapy room, I allow for silences, as this provides a space for you the client, to hear your thoughts and also gain clarity with issues you are experiencing.
This can be short moments or for good lengths of time. It is a process I invite into the therapy space, as we can learn so much. Silence can allow us to hear our thoughts, gain clarity and make self-informed decisions.
Listening to yourself
You may recall a time when you had to make a decision, you did not know what to do.
You would ask your friends for advice, a family member, a colleague, neighbour etc. This would lead to confusion, causing you to make a decision, that you came to later regret.
You may have had a time in your life when you took the advice from someone. In your mind you knew what to do, but went against your own thoughts or ideas. You did what they said, and things did not work out for you.
Your narrative probably went something along the lines of:
“ I knew I shouldn’t have done that!”
“Why didn’t I listen to myself.”
“I knew I was right.”
“If only I …..”
Imagine taking the time to be silent and asking yourself:
“what would be best for me?”
I believe you will be surprised!
A final thought
Silence can allow us to hear our thoughts, gain clarity, and make self-informed decisions.
Silence is your superpower.
Try it and see.
